Some houses carry a story so deep that it deserves to be heard. Vent Debout is one of them. More than beautiful, it has a soul. And we believe it’s essential to share the story of its owner — because it adds depth to everything you feel here.
“This house has seen children grow up, endured a war, and welcomed generations. It breathes memory and belonging.”
Originally, Vent Debout was a simple outbuilding — part of the majestic Les Tourelles, built between 1860 and 1880, when Arromanches was a refined seaside destination. The house entered the current owner’s family in the early 20th century.
After the war, her grandfather, Lucien Joly, took on the restoration of the house. Mayor of Arromanches from 1947 to 1963, he played a key role in rebuilding the village and helped establish the D-Day Museum. Vent Debout became a symbol of resilience, continuity, and family.
Over the decades, generations followed one another. Eight children, grandchildren, summers marked by tides, games on the beach, and dinners in the garden. The house still echoes with those shared memories.
In 2009, Lucien’s granddaughter and her husband bought the house. They fully renovated it to welcome their five children and write their own chapter. Vent Debout became a living, breathing place — anchored in the past, open to the future.
Telling this story is a way of honoring this unique place. And if you are lucky enough to stay here, perhaps you too will feel that invisible link between the walls and the lives they have sheltered. Welcome to a home full of stories.
